Severe clear-air turbulence has increased by 55% since 1979, moderate by 37%, and light by 17%. Clear-air turbulence is invisible and hard to forecast and it is predicted to double by 2050. According to a new study by the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, UK, the occurrence of severe clear-air turbulence has increased by 55% in the past 40 years, while moderate turbulence has increased by 37%, and light by 17%. Clear-air turbulence is not the kind you experience going through a storm. As wind shear gets worse, so does clear-air turbulence, with some weather researchers predicting it will double by 2050, with severe turbulence increasing the most.

Last summer, 22.9% of scheduled US flights arrived more than 15 minutes late at their destination. During the summer of 2019, 18.2% of flights were delayed, only marginally better than in 2022. Airports in New York and Orlando tend to record a high percentage of delays regardless of the year. Memorial Day weekend is kicking off what's expected to be a very busy air travel season, and many are wondering: is it going to be as bad as last summer? Take a look at the 20 airports with the worst delays — calculated by the percentage of flights leaving the airport and arriving more than 15 minutes late to their destination — for the summer of 2022, ranked from best to worst:
In March, lessor Airborne confiscated four of Flair Airlines' planes because of late payments. A low-cost Canadian upstart airline had four of its planes repossessed by New York-based aircraft lessor Airborne Capital on March 11, forcing the carrier to cancel multiple flights and leaving a trail of disgruntled passengers behind. Flair Airlines CEO Stephen Jones blamed "behind the scenes" scheming between the airline's competitors and Airborne Capital for the repossession of four of Flair's Boeing 737 planes. It's not the first time Flair has clashed with other Canadian airlines. US investment firm 777 Partners owns a 25% stake in Flair Airlines, which was cause for concern for the CTA.

Running from June to October in Quebec, the Coradia iLint will be North America's first hydrogen train. It can be a greener alternative to diesel on non-electrified train tracks — over 90% of tracks in North America. North America will have its very first hydrogen-powered train this summer season. Alstom first started running two of its bright blue Coradia iLint trains in Europe in 2018, and it has delivered 41 more since then. Take a look at the Coradia iLint train:
Proposed government regulations for airlines could lead to higher ticket prices, Delta's CEO said. The regulations would require airlines to compensate passengers for controllable delays or cancellations. If the Biden administration introduces new regulations requiring airlines to compensate passengers for controllable cancellations and delays, ticket prices will go up, according to Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian. Earlier this month, the US Department of Transportation announced plans to come up with new rules that would hold airlines more accountable for potential cancellations and delays. It does not provide compensation in the form of cash — no major US airline does that — travel vouchers, or frequent flyer miles.

There's high demand for international summer travel and likely not enough seats to satisfy it. Americans have their eyes set on international travel — and Europe especially. If you want to fly to Europe this summer, you're likely going to spend $300 more than you would have before the pandemic. Last year, it was flights within the US that had their most expensive summer in years, averaging $376 round trip. "Next summer for international will be less expensive than this summer and probably start returning to some level of normalcy similar to what happened with domestic," Berg said.
Booking a domestic flight 3 to 4 months in advance helps travelers find the best price. Prices for US domestic flights have finally cooled off after a very expensive 2022. Other than domestic flights, only flights to South America and the Antilles are cheaper than they were last year. Finding the best deal for summer travel is all about timing. Domestic mid-week flights — Wednesday especially — are on average $56 cheaper year-round, $60 cheaper over the summer, and up to $100 cheaper during holidays.
I recently tried to eat at McDonald's as a person with celiac disease. McDonald's doesn't claim any of its food as gluten-free so I was very limited in what I could order. McDonald's is one of the largest chain restaurants in the US, with over 13,000 locations across the country. Eating out with celiac is not easy, but restaurant chains often provide a safe haven, given their strict food preparation protocols and allergen lists stamped everywhere. In Italy, for example, McDonald's sells an uninspiring but safe gluten-free burger that is cooked wrapped in plastic to avoid cross-contamination.
Emirates' new check-in store is 30 minutes from the airport by public transport, and 15 by car. The location should allow passengers to avoid long lines and crowds at the airport. Emirates is getting ready to open a store that would allow passengers to check in and drop off their bags without having to go to the airport. Much like an airline desk at any airport, it will also give passengers the option to book travel, according to Emirates. Emirates' robot check-in assistant is called Sara and is equipped to match faces with scanned passports and give passengers instructions.

TSA's new technology snaps a real-time picture of a passenger and matches it with their scanned ID. A new facial recognition technology is automatically matching passengers' real-time pictures to their IDs at Baltimore-Washington International/Thurgood Marshall Airport. The Transportation Security Administration has started using 36 new credential authentication technology units at the airport, according to a recent press release. If someone doesn't want their picture taken, they can proceed with a standard ID check with a TSA officer, a TSA spokesperson previously told Insider. TSA started using the technology in 2022, and similar units are also being used at Denver International Airport, and Salt Lake City International Airport, among others.
Air France and KLM are the latest airlines to join in on the "basic" business class trend: offering passengers a cheaper business class ticket, without some of the perks usually associated with the class. These are usually sold in comparison to the full business class experience, called "flex", "flex plus", "comfort", and "elite". Here are some of the airlines that have gone basic with their business offerings:Air France and KLMAir France business class seat. Thomas Pallini/InsiderQatar Airways introduced its own unbundled business class in 2020 — offering Classic, Comfort, and Elite business tickets — and it has since then added an additional tier, the Lite business class ticket. Alaska Airlines is removing check-in kiosks as part of a $2.5 billion overhaul of its airport lobbies. Alaska Airlines has started removing kiosks to print boarding passes at airports, as part of a $ 2.5 billion investment in its passengers' "lobby experience." QR codes in airport lobbies will prompt passengers to get a boarding pass on their phones if they arrive without one, an Alaska Airlines representative told Insider. Kiosks have already been removed at nine airports: Portland International Airport in Oregon, Boise Airport, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Indianapolis International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Missoula International, Ontario International, Palm Springs International, Rocky Gutierrez Airport in Sitka, Alaska. Alaska Airlines is a passengers' favorite in terms of customer satisfaction, according to a recent survey.
Emergency start devices sold online starting at $1,600 can hack into a car through its wire network. The easiest access to car wires is through the headlights, car security experts say. "Normally, the wake-up message happens when you've pressed your car key. The hacking device sends a message to the car's front network — a car has many networks for logistic reasons — pretending to be the key. To study the hacking system, Tindell and Tabor purchased a similar hacking device online and reverse-engineered it.
